How to Choose Vanity Lights

Vanity lights are among the most important fixtures in your home because they directly affect how you see yourself. The right vanity light eliminates harsh shadows, delivers accurate colour rendering, and adds a design accent that elevates the entire bathroom.

Above-mirror vs. flanking
A single bar light above the mirror is the most common approach. For the most flattering illumination, however, two vertical sconces flanking the mirror at eye level eliminate under-chin shadows and provide even cross-lighting.
Sizing to your vanity
Choose a vanity light that is roughly 75% the width of your mirror. A 36-inch mirror pairs well with a 24-28 inch three-light bath bar. For double vanities, use two matching fixtures — one centered over each basin.
Colour temperature matters
A warm-white LED (2700K-3000K) provides the most natural, flattering skin tones. Avoid cool-white (4000K+) bulbs in bathroom vanity applications — they can make skin appear washed out and unflattering.
Moisture ratings
Vanity lights installed near showers or tubs must be damp-rated at minimum. Fixtures inside a shower enclosure need a wet rating. Most vanity lights are damp-rated by default, but always verify before installation.

Common questions
Bath Vanity FAQ
Should vanity lights go above or beside the mirror?
For the most flattering light, install sconces on both sides of the mirror at eye level (about 60-66 inches from the floor). If side mounting isn't possible, a single bar light centered above the mirror is the next best option.
How wide should my vanity light be?
Choose a fixture that is roughly 75% the width of your mirror. This keeps the light proportional and prevents it from extending beyond the mirror edges.
What colour temperature is best for a bathroom vanity?
Warm white (2700K-3000K) is ideal for vanity lighting. It provides the most natural-looking illumination and flattering skin tones for grooming and makeup application.
Are vanity lights damp-rated?
Most vanity lights are rated for damp locations, which covers standard bathroom installations. For fixtures installed inside a shower or directly over a bathtub, a wet-rated fixture is required.
What vanity light brands do you carry?
We stock vanity lights from Visual Comfort, Hudson Valley, Mitzi, Hinkley, Generation Lighting, WAC Lighting, and many other trusted manufacturers.
Do vanity lights ship free?
Yes, free standard shipping on all orders over $199 across Canada, including vanity lights and bath bar fixtures.
