David Trubridge continued his “story telling” installations at the annual Milan show, which started with Spiral Islands (2008) and the Baskets of Knowledge (2009), with Icarus in 2010.

As Trubridge describes it:
“Icarus is based on the familiar Greek myth that is so apposite for our times: fly too high and the sun will get too hot!”

Icarus is made up of three large WING lights circling around a single orange SOLA. The complete Icarus installation was purchased by the Pompidou Centre in Paris for its permanent collection in 2012.

The SOLA light is made from 60 individual pieces, which recall the shape of solar flares, and make intricate shadow patterns that decorate the walls and ceiling. SOLA is part of a series of lights in the design of which Trubridge continued to play with the spherical form – which originated with his first lighting design CORAL, and continued with FLORAL and SOLA. In 2016, Trubridge designed SOLA’s opposite, POLA, with delicate snowflake-shaped component pieces.

David Trubridge

Whakatu, New Zealand

David Trubridge is an acclaimed New Zealand design house celebrated for its mastery of sculptural ethereality and its pioneering approach to sustainable high end illumination. Founded by the English born boat builder and designer of the same name, the brand has evolved from a small workshop in Whakatu into a global authority for organic kit set lighting. Today, the company is a primary resource for architects and interior designers seeking biophilic elegance, offering a prestigious catalog of intricate geometric pendants and floor lamps that serve as the artistic heart of a modern space.

What truly distinguishes David Trubridge is its unwavering commitment to environmental integrity and the masterful use of sustainably sourced bamboo plywood. The brand’s philosophy centers on the belief that design should reflect the patterns of the natural world, utilizing complex mathematical structures such as the iconic Coral and Floral fixtures to cast dramatic forest like shadows. By prioritizing a Seed System shipping method, which reduces the carbon footprint by delivering fixtures as flat pack kits for on site assembly, the brand ensures its products provide a professional grade aesthetic without compromising ecological values. This dedication to technical precision and natural modernist silhouettes results in a signature look of timeless weightlessness, making their lighting an essential, soulful element of any curated residential or commercial environment.
