How to Choose an Outdoor Ceiling Fan
Wet vs. damp rating
Covered porches and screened rooms need damp-rated fans. Open pergolas, gazebos, and any location exposed to direct rain require wet-rated fans. Never install a dry-rated indoor fan outdoors.
Blade material
ABS composite, marine-grade plywood, and aluminum blades resist moisture, warping, and UV fading. Avoid standard wood blades outdoors — they'll swell and warp in humid or wet conditions.
Blade span
Outdoor spaces are often larger than indoor rooms. Choose a fan with a blade span of 52-72 inches for standard patios. Very large covered areas may benefit from two fans installed in tandem.
