How to Choose an Indoor Ceiling Fan

A ceiling fan is one of the most energy-efficient comfort upgrades for any room. Modern indoor fans combine whisper-quiet motors, smart controls, and striking blade designs to circulate air effectively while serving as a prominent design element in bedrooms, living rooms, and family spaces.

Blade span by room size
Room size determines the ideal blade span. Rooms up to 75 sq ft need a 29-36 inch fan. Rooms 76-144 sq ft suit 36-42 inches. Rooms 144-225 sq ft call for 44-50 inches. Rooms over 225 sq ft need 52-72 inch fans.
Ceiling height & mounting
Standard (downrod) mounts work for ceilings 8-9 feet. Flush/hugger mounts keep blades close to the ceiling for rooms under 8 feet. Extended downrods accommodate ceilings above 9 feet. Blades should be at least 7 feet from the floor.
Motor types
DC motors are quieter, more energy-efficient, and offer more speed settings than AC motors. AC motors are proven and cost-effective. For bedrooms and living areas where noise matters, a DC motor fan is worth the investment.
Fan with or without light
Many ceiling fans include integrated LED light kits, replacing the need for a separate ceiling fixture. Fans without lights offer a cleaner aesthetic and allow you to layer lighting independently with other fixtures.

Common questions
Ventilateurs d'Intérieur FAQ
What size ceiling fan do I need?
Measure your room's square footage. Up to 75 sq ft needs 29-36 inches, 76-144 sq ft needs 36-42 inches, 144-225 sq ft needs 44-50 inches, and 225+ sq ft needs 52 inches or larger. Oversizing slightly is better than undersizing.
Can I use a ceiling fan in a room with low ceilings?
Yes. Flush-mount (hugger) fans sit close to the ceiling and work well in rooms with 7.5-8 foot ceilings. The blades should be at least 7 feet from the floor for safety and comfort.
Do ceiling fans save energy?
Yes. Running a ceiling fan allows you to raise your thermostat 4-6°F in summer without sacrificing comfort, reducing cooling costs by up to 30%. In winter, reversing the fan direction redistributes warm air from the ceiling.
Are ceiling fans noisy?
Modern fans — especially DC motor models — are remarkably quiet. Look for fans with noise ratings of 1-2 sones for near-silent operation. Larger blade spans at lower speeds also produce less noise than small, fast-spinning blades.
What indoor ceiling fan brands do you carry?
We carry indoor fans from Modern Forms, Fanimation, Hinkley, Monte Carlo, Visual Comfort Fan, Minka Aire, and many other leading brands.
Do ceiling fans ship free?
Yes, free standard shipping on all orders over $199 across Canada. Fans ship in manufacturer packaging designed for safe transit.
