Size the fixture before anything else. Add the room length and width in feet, then read that total as inches for a starting diameter, so a 12 by 14 foot room points to roughly 26 inches. Hang 30 to 36 inches above a dining table. Over a 72-inch island, two or three smaller pendants spaced 24 to 30 inches apart work better than one.
