How to Choose an Area Rug

An area rug is the foundation that ties a room together. It defines seating areas, softens hard floors, dampens sound, and introduces pattern, colour, and texture at the largest scale in the room. Getting the size and placement right is the key to a polished interior.

Sizing for living rooms
In a living room, the rug should be large enough that at least the front legs of all major seating pieces sit on it. An 8' × 10' or 9' × 12' rug is standard for most living room layouts. Undersized rugs make a room feel disjointed.
Dining room rugs
A dining room rug must extend at least 24 inches beyond the table on all sides so chairs remain on the rug when pulled out. For a 42 × 72 inch table, an 8' × 10' rug is the minimum recommended size.
Bedroom rugs
Place a large rug under the bed so it extends 18-24 inches on each side and at the foot. Alternatively, use two runners along the bed sides. The rug should be the first thing your feet touch in the morning.
Material & durability
Wool is the gold standard — durable, naturally stain-resistant, and luxuriously soft. Synthetic fibres (polypropylene, nylon) are budget-friendly and easy to clean. Jute and sisal add natural texture but suit low-traffic areas best.

Common questions
Area Rugs FAQ
What size area rug do I need for my living room?
For most living rooms, an 8' × 10' or 9' × 12' rug works best. The front legs of your sofa and chairs should sit on the rug. Too-small rugs make the room feel disconnected and undersized.
Can I put an area rug on carpet?
Yes. Layering an area rug over carpet adds texture and defines a seating zone. Use a thin, flat-weave rug to avoid a lumpy appearance, and ensure the rug lies flat with a rug pad underneath.
How do I keep an area rug from sliding?
Use a non-slip rug pad cut 1-2 inches smaller than the rug on all sides. Rug pads also add cushioning, extend the rug's life, and protect the floor underneath.
What material is most durable for high-traffic areas?
Wool and nylon are the most durable options. Wool naturally resists stains and wear while maintaining a luxurious feel. Nylon is the toughest synthetic fibre and cleans easily.
What area rug brands do you carry?
We carry area rugs from Loloi (including Amber Lewis and Chris Loves Julia collaborations), Surya, and other leading rug brands.
Do area rugs ship free?
Yes, free standard shipping on all orders over $199 across Canada.
