How to Choose a Modern Chandelier

Sizing, placement, and finish are the three decisions that determine whether a modern chandelier looks intentional or awkward. Get these right and the fixture earns its place. Get them wrong and even a beautiful piece feels off.

Size it to the room

Add your room length and width in feet. That number in inches is your target diameter. A 12 x 14 foot dining room calls for a 26 inch fixture. For open-concept spaces, scale up by 4 to 6 inches. When in doubt, go larger rather than smaller.

Nail the hanging height

Over a dining table, the bottom of the fixture should sit 30 to 36 inches above the surface. In an entryway or stairwell, keep the bottom at least 7 feet from the floor. Add 3 inches of drop for every additional foot of ceiling height above 8 feet.

Match the finish to the room

Matte black reads strongest in spaces with white walls and natural wood tones. Brushed brass works in warmer palettes with oak, walnut, or terracotta. Polished nickel and chrome sit cleanly in cool, minimal interiors. Pick one finish and carry it through your hardware and plumbing fixtures.

Layer your lighting
