Recessed Lighting & Pot Lights Canada – LED Downlights, Trims & Housings

Recessed lighting — known across Canada as pot lights — sits flush in the ceiling to deliver clean, even illumination without a visible fixture. It’s the backbone of most modern lighting plans: general ambient light in living rooms and kitchens, task light over a counter, and wall-wash or accent light, all from fixtures that keep ceilings uncluttered. Our range covers LED downlights, trims and housings, and ultra-slim canless fixtures for retrofits and low-clearance ceilings.

For slim, low-profile options, see our Lotus LED and DALS collections, or browse Canadian-made systems from Liteline.

Montreal Lighting & Hardware carries recessed lighting online and at our showroom in Mount-Royal, Quebec. All products are priced in Canadian dollars with free shipping on orders over $199 CAD.

Recessed Downlights, Trims & Canless LED

Recessed Downlights (Pot Lights)

Recessed downlights provide even, glare-controlled light from within the ceiling, ideal for general illumination in living areas, kitchens, hallways, and bedrooms. Spaced correctly across a ceiling, they deliver uniform light without the visual weight of surface fixtures.

Trims & Housings

Traditional recessed systems pair a housing (the part inside the ceiling) with a trim (the visible ring). Trims range from baffle and reflector to adjustable eyeball and wall-wash styles, letting you tailor each fixture to its job — general light, accenting art, or grazing a wall.

Canless & Slim LED

Ultra-slim canless LED fixtures install in shallow ceilings where a traditional housing won’t fit, making them ideal for retrofits, insulated ceilings, and low-clearance spaces. They deliver even light from a thin profile and often include selectable colour temperature.

Recessed Lighting FAQs

What are pot lights?

“Pot lights” is the common Canadian term for recessed lighting — fixtures installed into the ceiling so they sit flush with the surface. They provide clean, even illumination without a visible hanging or surface fixture, and are used for ambient, task, and accent lighting throughout a home.

What size recessed lights do I need, and how far apart?

Smaller 3 to 4-inch fixtures suit accent light and tighter spaces; 5 to 6-inch fixtures are common for general room lighting. A simple spacing guideline is to divide the ceiling height by two — for an 8-foot ceiling, space fixtures roughly 4 feet apart — then adjust for the room and the light output. Keep fixtures far enough from walls to avoid scalloped shadows.

What’s the difference between canless (slim) and traditional recessed lights?

Traditional recessed lighting uses a separate housing (can) and trim installed in the ceiling, offering flexibility in trims and bulbs. Canless slim LED fixtures are self-contained, ultra-thin units that install directly into a small ceiling opening — easier for retrofits and shallow or insulated ceilings, with the LED integrated into the fixture.

Can recessed lights be installed in insulated ceilings?

Only fixtures rated for insulation contact (IC-rated) should be in direct contact with insulation — using a non-IC fixture against insulation is a safety issue. Many slim canless LEDs and IC-rated housings are made for insulated ceilings. Confirm the fixture’s IC rating on its spec sheet, and have recessed lighting installed by a qualified electrician.

Are recessed lights dimmable?

Most LED recessed fixtures are dimmable with a compatible LED dimmer. Match the dimmer’s wattage rating to the combined load of the fixtures on the circuit, and confirm the fixture is marked dimmable. Check the spec sheet for any recommended dimmers to avoid flicker at low levels.
